Cartoons, 1944-1957.

The collection is comprised of 512 oversized original charcoal and ink cartoons drawn by Gray for, and published in, The Militant from 1944-1957. Dates, captions, and the page in The Militant upon which a drawing appeared are available for most items. A complete set of photocopies, arranged in chronological order, is available for quick perusal of the collection. Following contemporary events on a weekly basis, the collection constitutes a graphic record of and commentary on the post-World War II years. Gray was particularly effective in her representation of political personalities (including Franco, Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Truman, Churchill). She dissected both national and international issues, especially those issues which effected working people. Her choice of subjects include the War Labor Board, the No-Strike Pledge, the Little Steel Formula, Racism (Emmett Till and the KKK), the Depression, McCarthyism, Foreign Aid and Unemployment.

Artist Laura Gray (1909-1958) became staff cartoonist for The Militant, the newspaper of the Socialist Workers Party in 1944, and produced a cartoon for the paper each week from 1944 to 1957.
